WELCOME TO WONDERLAND AT KALEIDOSCOPE : the festival’s creative programme curated for kids! Eight stages, workshops and inspirational activities for all ages!


WONDERLAND will take place across two locations in the festival site. Each location will be tailored to specific age groups:

  • WONDERLAND IN THE WOODS (4-10 years) - set in a magical wonderland. Cross a magical red Japanese footbridge to the mysterious Lady Beit Island, surrounded by the tallest, rarest and most talkative trees on the Russborough Estate.

  • WONDERLAND IN THE WALLED GARDEN (10-16 years) - an inspiration explosion, contained in the stunning Walled Gardens … be inspired by world-class creativity with photography, animation and film workshops, as well as storybook clinics, writing workshops and tonnes more!

WONDERLAND has 4 stages for 4-10s (Science, History & Nature / Creativity / Storytelling / Workshops) and 4 stages for 10-16s (Creativity / Storytelling/ Workshops / Empowerment). Over the course of the festival, dozens of creative and brilliant minds will descend on Russborough House to create wonder of truly epic proportions for children and teenagers!

Remember to pack your sketchbooks, notebooks, pens, pencils & cameras so you can dive into the art and photography workshops taking place across the weekend.

Please note : responsible adults must accompany children of any age who wish to take part in any Wonderland workshops. Workshop places are limited and on a first come first serve basis, so check the schedule to make sure you’re in good time to see your faves!

Whit whoo we got? Yep it’s true - DON CONROY! Whether you grew up with him on your tv or this is your first time seeing him doing his thing, this is going to be EPIC!! DON "The Drawing Don" CONROY is joining us over the weekend at KALEIDOSCOPE to host some drawing workshops for all to enjoy and join in. Grab your pens, pencils and sketchbooks and Let's Draw!! Our bets is there will be an owl or two, what do you reckon?

There’s a Hen’s Teeth Doodlebooth (like a photobooth but you get your picture drawn instead of taken), a grand pantheon of graphic designers, the National Gallery of Ireland – you want inspiration? You got it!

WONDERLAND’s demos, talks and workshops will be led by a huge variety of top Irish and international artists including: Aga Grandowicz, Al Murphy, Andy Rementer, Aoife Dooley, Boys & Girls, Cian Ryan, Deirdre Breen, Design Partners, Ian Anderson TDRTM, ICAD, Izzy Wheels, Jon Burgerman, Mack Signs, Morag Myerscough, RichardsDee, Signs of Power, WhyDesign and many more to be announced!

Could you be the next great Rock & Roll photographer of your generation? Well your future career starts here, with photography workshops being led by some of the best in the business, including Linda Brownlee, Annie Collinge and Evan Doherty, to name but a few!

If moving image, film and animation are more your vibe, then you’re in luck! The incredibly talented teams from Digital Beast, Motherland and Cartoon Saloon will be here to inspire and encourage aspiring film makers and animation aficionados alike. Cinema Under the Stars at The Hippodrome will even be screening some of the acclaimed productions of these amazing teams on the big screen over the course of the weekend! We’ll also be showing Nathan Jurevicius’Quiggle’ series, Oliver Jeffers’ ‘Lost & Found’, Conor Finnegan’s ‘Becca’s Bunch’ amongst lots of other family favourites and more.

We’re only thrilled to be working with Children’s Books Ireland who will host story book clinics with billions of authors and creative spirits across the weekend. Avid readers and budding illustrators will have the opportunity to learn from some of the most acclaimed illustrators and authors of our time. Contributors include Anorak Magazine, Chris Haughton, Chris Judge, Dot Magazine, Genevieve Gauckler, Holly Pereira, Jill & Gill, John Burke of Irelandopedia, Tado, Matthew Griffin, Sarah Webb, My Higher Shelf, Nicola Colton, Paula McGloin, Rebecca Cobb, Sally Caulwell, Steve Simpson & Sub City Comics with more to come. These sessions are not to be missed!

Love to laugh, ha ha hee hee tee hee wee hee bleeeee? Us too! We’ve curated some comedy line up for your deloltation … head to Wonderland to hear hilarity from the lollity likes of Diane O’Connor, Ailish McCarthy, Damian Clark, Ian Lynam, Kate Feeney, Sharon Mannion and Tara Calihman, with more to be announced.

Wait there’s more! We’re delighted to host Fighting Words to deliver a spoken word programme for kids and teens centred on standing up and being heard! Fighting Words harnesses the power of the imagination and creative writing to shape creative and resilient children and young people to be empowered through the art of storytelling to be the shapers of their own worlds! Also joining us over the festival weekend is the passionate Mother Tongues, who will deliver chats celebrating the beauty and benefits and challenges of bilingualism and to teach children about languages from around the world! KALEIDOSCOPE is also excited to welcome the team from the ever empowering The Other podcast with a panel talk of designers who use bright and bold colours to produce vibrant and impactful work. Keep your ear to the ground!

Tech whizzes rejoice! We got Coder Dojo Unplugged With Lightscape - a projection mapping and creative content studio based in Dublin; whose mind-blowing creations need to be seen to be believed!

Lab coats at the ready as the Science Gallery will host collaborative activities where science and art collide, intended to bring out the mad scientist in all of us! Catch The Ark of Imperfection with Maurizio Toscano and the very participation and research-based Discovery Stories for mind blowers so mind blowing they’ll blow your mind.

In collaboration with the Irish Times, we’re proud to present a series of talks across the Wonderland weekend. Kids tell the best jokes on stage at You Must Be Joking (we’re not!), Kids Ask Other Kids Important Questions, Mark Langtry IS The Science Guy and find out some Wheely Interesting facts with Irish sisters Ailbhe and Izzy Keane, the dynamo duo behind Izzy Wheels.

Explorium - Ireland’s National Sports and Science Centre - will be on hand with an exciting programme that takes science out of the laboratory and into the rolling hills of Wicklow.

Come to a drawing class with a difference with Aga Grandowicz aka the co-creator of ‘Dr Hibernica Finch’s Compelling Compendium of Irish Animals’. What’s the difference? It’s a drawing class where you learn to draw a wildly wonderful world of Irish animals. Wow!

Create your My Mask with Andy Rementer - a workshop to help you create the mask of your alter ego, and then get a picture with it! Mind blower!

Like spidrons? Frogs? Snails? Giant African land snails? Fire belly salamanders? Blue-tongued skinks? If the answer is YES, then you’ll find a kindred spirit in Collie Ennis! Collie is a research associate in the Department of Zoology at Trinity College Dublin, and he’ll be perched in Wonderland, ready to share his vast knowledge and passion for bugs and reptiles with his follow herpetology enthusiasts.

If you’re curiously curious and a healthy interest in the supernatural then you simply must join in the Hunt for the Russborough Burrower with Dr Mick Marmaduke from the Department of Cryptozoology as he quests through the wilds of Russborough House on an epic monster hunt!

Come open up a big Box of History with historian John Burke. He’ll be popping open said box with everything from a 500 million year old trilobite to an inkwell and blotting book from his school days, among many many more fascinating artefacts!

Learn about feeling naturally delicious with nutritionist Alan Flanagan. Talks and workshops centred on nature and the environment are also planned with contributors ranging from Diarmuid Gavin, to The Upcycle Movement and eco-conscious womenswear brand Zoë Carol.

Throughout Wonderland, Ireland’s leading Special Needs Support organisation All Abilities Ireland will provide professional SNA support to the Kaleidoscope creative team, facilitating OT inspired creative movement classes and sensory play programmes.
